A great event for all ages and to grab some fabulously unique crimbo pressies!

If all this wasn't enough, in December we have York Does Vintage on Sunday 2nd December 2012 at Merchant Adventurers Hall and Masham Does Vintage on Saturday 8th December 2012, at Masham Town Hall.  More details on these events to be announced, but a great places to do some Christmas shopping.  I'm sure we'll also be added some special Christmas touches to the events.  Check back here or visit our Facebook or Twitter page for more info.

The Sixties Exhibiton at York Castle Museum

Hope you're all getting excited about the return of York Does Vintage on Sunday 14th October 2012!

If you can't wait and want to do something vintage between now and then, then why not go to the Sixties exhibition at the Castle Museum?  If you've got a York Card, you can get in for free.

They have some fab clothes on display from the era, like these 60s dresses.

The one on the left is a printed cotton dress with matching coat from 1969, that was donated to the museum by the owner who bought it as her going away outfit. The dress on the right is a printed nylon dress from 1968

And to go along with dresses are some very cool boots, accessories  and 60s make-up!

There's a good collection of 60s memorabilia.  Lots of items connected with music, a working jukebox, books, and toys.

Also the exhibition play homage to 60s TV with clips of programmes and news reels you can select to watch.  An early episode of Doctor Who staring William Hartnell is one of the things you you can view.

Another highlight of the exhibition is this Mod scooter and Parka on display.

So, if you like the 60s, then it's definately worth getting over the the Castle Museum for a look.

I will say I did find it a bit strange (in a good way!) looking at items that for me are so familiar on display in a museum in glass cases.  The clothes especially, because at our events there are often items not too dissimilar to the ones you can see in the pictures above for sale.  But then that's the point of the Castle Museum, it shows how ordinary people lived in the past and they are preserving items from this era for the future.

Alzheimer's Society Memory Walk 23/09/2012

If you've ever been to one of our vintage events you might have seen on the promotional material - for example the beautiful flyer for our upcoming York Does Vintage on 14th October 2012 (on the left), that we support the Alzheimer's Society.

Today I took part in the Alzheimer's Society Memory Walk, at the Knavesmire in York.  There more than three hundred  people who turned up to do the walk - which is amazing!

You can see a video from ITV's Calender News about the event here:-

Taking Steps the Beat Alzheimer's

To get us all in the mood the volunteers started us off with a sing-song.

Here they're doing "Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes" as a warm up!

Richard McCourt from TV's Dick and Dom open the event with a speech about why he supports the Alzheimer's Society.

He told us that his mother suffered from the disease and  she died two years ago this weekend at the age of 64.  It's clearly a charity close to his heart.  He then cut the ribbon and led us off on the walk.

So a BIG well done to everyone who took part and thanks to all the stewarts and volunteers who made the day such a success!  I can't wait to see what the grand total was from the day, but hopefully we've raised quite a lot of money for the charity.

So far my total stands at £115. If you'd like to donate to the Alzheimer's Society, then please visit my Just Giving page below:-

Alzheimer's Society Memory Walk

Yorkshire Does Vintage is a supporter of the Alzheimer's Society.  When you visit our events a small portion of the ticket price goes towards the charity.  Every year the Alzheimer's Society organise a charity walk called the Memory Walk to raise money and awareness.  This years York walk takes place on Sunday 21st September 2012 at the Knavesmire.

There are about 800,000 people in the UK with dementia and it mainly affects people over the age of 65.  As yet there is no cure and the disease can affect anyone, in fact most people will know someone who suffered from dementia.  This why it's so important to raise money to help fund the Alzheimer's Society, because it helps fund research and care for people suffering from dementia.

I'm taking part this year to help this worthy cause raise some money.  If you like to sponsor me, here's my Just Giving Page:-

Vintage Fashion - V&A Style

Yesterday I went to the Victoria and Albert Museum to see their Ballgowns: British Glamour Since the 1950s Exhibition. The exhibition was amazing and any lovers of vintage fashion should get down to London and see these beautiful dresses before it ends in May.

Photography isn't permitted, so you'll have to take my word for it that it's a stunning exhibition.  There are some photos on the V&A website if you'd like to see more.  Tickets cost £11.50 - which includes a donation to the museum.

Visitors are allowed however to take photos of the other fashion items on display.  I took some of a few outfits from the 20th century.

The dresses on the left and right are Edwardian.  Anyone watching the BBC2 drama Parade's End? The dress on the left is very like something Valentine would wear and the dress on the left looks a bit like Sylvia's wedding dress.

On to the 1920s.  Three beautiful dresses!  The one of the left was influenced by Japanese kimonos.

How fab is the orange one on the right? It looks like it was made for dancing the Charleston in.

Some 1930s outfits here.  The dress on the left is completely timeless and wouldn't look out of place at a modern event.

On the right is a 1930s jumpsuit which had a Mrs. Simpson look about it.
I seem to have missed the 1940s off on on photos and gone straight to the 1950s!

The dress on the left seems next to near impossible that anyone could have fitted in it - that's a proper hourglass figure!  Two beautiful 50s ballgowns on the right.  The pretty one with the roses is like something a Disney Princess would wear.

These two 1960s looks are possible the easiest looks to copy if you shop at our vintage events.

Something like 60s suit on the right could be worn to the office today, and a dress in a similar style to the on the left could be worn to any celebration from a party, to a Christmas do.

Finally, some super 1970s outfits.  Looking round some of the high street shops there's very much a bohemian look this year for Autumn/Winter which harks back to the sort of styles you can see in the photo on the left.

Love the 70s blouses on the back wall and the beautiful gold metal dress in the front of the display.

Don't forget the V&A is free to go round (unless it's a special exhibition like the ballgowns one), so if you love vintage fashion it really is the place to go and get inspired.

Masham Does Vintage - A BIG Thank You

We'd just like to say a BIG thank you everyone who came to Masham Does Vintage on Saturday 15th September 2012.

We got nearly eight hundred people through the door - which for our first event there was phenomenal!  There will be a press release and some photographs from the event very soon, so keep an eye on this blog or the Facebook page.  I was away that weekend and missed Masham Does Vintage, so I can't wait to see these photos.

The lovely people of Masham gave us some positive comments, saying they'd never had anything like this and they'd love us to come back again.  Well, I can announce that we will be back, and we'll let you know the date of the next one very soon.  If you want to be part of the amazing vibe that we had at Masham, then why not come along to the next event.  You can always end your visit with a swift half in the Black Sheep Brewery!

Any of you know how to jive?  Perhaps you'd like to show off your moves?  Lets get everyone at Masham Does Vintage up on their feet and dancing!
